Installing epcEdit on a Solaris system
The following steps describe how to install epcEdit on a Solaris system. These instructions apply to the epcEdit package distributed over the internet; if you
have received epcEdit on a CD-ROM, please refer to the installation instructions on the CD.
Requirements:
- Solaris version 2.6 or above and X11.
- The epcEdit package (epcedit-1.2.6-sparc-solaris2.6.tar) for Solaris including a binary Tcl/Tk 8.3.4 package.
- Approximately 30 Megabytes of disk space during the installation.
Upgrading from Release 1.2 or 1.2.x
You can use the upgrade utility of epcEdit to upgrade from release 1.2 or 1.2.x to 1.2.6. Please follow these steps to upgrade your epcEdit installation:
- Make sure that you have write permissions for the epcEdit installation directories and make sure that no files are write-protected. You may need to
change to another user ID to gain write access:
cd /usr/local/tksgml chmod -R u+w *
- Run the epcEdit upgrade utility with the command
epcedit -upgrade and follow the instructions on the screen.
The upgrade utility will replace only the components of epcEdit that have changed from release 1.2 or 1.2.x to release 1.2.6
If you have problems upgrading your epcEdit 1.2 installation, please replace the upgrade script /usr/local/tksgml/lib/epcEdit-1.2/upgrade.tcl with this version.
Installation
epcEdit 1.2.6 is available as a stand-alone version with a complete Tcl/Tk 8.3.4 system and an integrated TkSGML package. If you are an experienced user, you
can use the TkSGML library with any Tcl/Tk version starting from 8.1. epcEdit does not run with Tcl/Tk versions other than 8.3.4.
Download the required package
Unless you haven't already done so, you'll need to download epcEdit for your system to a directory of your choice.
Uninstall any previous version of epcEdit
If you have a previous installation of epcEdit prior to 1.2, please do not install epcEdit 1.2.6 into the same directory.
You have to enter a new installation directory during the setup process or delete/rename the existing installation directory before starting the installer.
Installing the Solaris package
The Linux package comes with a graphical installation software and a complete Tcl/Tk system and is used to install both Tcl/Tk and epcEdit on your system.
- Extract the installer and all additional files from the archive with the following command ("sh>" resembles the shell prompt):
sh> tar -xf epcedit-1.2.6-sparc-solaris2.6.tar
This will create a directory named epcedit-1.2.6-sparc-solaris2.6 that contains the setup program for epcEdit 1.2.6.
- Start the installation program by entering the command
sh> ./epcedit-1.2.6-sparc-solaris2.6/setup
and follow the instructions on your screen.
If you have installed epcEdit in the directory $INSTPATH, you should be able to start the editor application by running the command
bash> $INSTPATH/bin/epcedit
You may choose to add the directory $INSTPATH/bin to your PATH environment variable or to create a symbolic link to the file $INSTPATH/bin/epcedit in one of the directories already in your PATH.
